Barry Dawes: A Much Higher Gold Price is Coming

Barry discusses his early interest in geology which led him to study it in university. He ended up learning a great deal about commodities both through working in Canberra and then London. This allowed him to meet a lot of industry leaders and later he became involved in the gold market in Australia which was quite small at the time. Living in Australia and being in an Asian time zone has given him a different perspective from many U.S. investors.

Copper has always been a favorite metal for Barry being the third largest metal in terms of consumption and continues its historical pattern of long term growth. China and Asia use an enormous amount of copper and shortages are developing. This should result in a boom in copper prices and then new exploration.

He is a believer in the Pilbara district scale gold discoveries in Australia that area may contain a lot of gold, but it’s uncertain how much will be extractable. Regardless over the coming years, the district will likely become a significant contributor to Australia’s gold production.

Markets are all about the flow of capital, and there has been an over-weighting of capital in cash and bond markets. Investors should heed the demand and not the politically driven commentary which is usually inaccurate.

He says, “You can be positive and optimistic without being worried about the end of the world.” There is a lot of gold going from the east to the west. Asians all want a middle-class lifestyle. The demand for commodities will, therefore, continue to grow. People who invest long-term in the resource sector can do so with an enormous amount of confidence.
